Circular Economy Seed Funding Grant Awarded To Tait Labs

January 24, 2023 (Vancouver, BC) – Tait Labs is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Circular Economy Seed Funding program. The funds will be used for a collaborative research and development project with the research group of Professor Vikramaditya Yadav. The project is entitled “Bioconversion of citrus peel residues to edible proteins as an enabler of total valorization“

The company had recently developed and patented a clean extraction technology for citrus peels capable of converting 50% of waste peel mass into a high-value prebiotic-rich fiber. Now, the company seeks to achieve its second objective of total utilization of peel waste by upcycling the remaining 50% of the residue, using it as a novel substrate for yeast fermentation into single-cell protein (SCP). The ultimate goal is to help sustainably stave off the “protein crisis” – meeting the nutritional requirements of the world’s population whose growth past 10B will require an increase of 70% in protein-rich food production by 2050.

Circular Economy Seed Funding is coordinated by the University of British Columbia’s of Materials and Manufacturing Research Institute (MMRI), with the support from the National Research Council of Canada- Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC-IRAP).

  • Canadian Patent Issued to Tait Labs

Canadian Patent Issued to Tait Labs

We’re pleased to announce that we have been issued a Canadian Patent on our citrus peel extraction technology. 🍊💧

Kudos to our co-inventors Harish Vasudevan PhD, CA-AM and Andrew Tait, and special thanks to our National Research Council Canada / Conseil national de recherches Canada IRAP-ITA Maureen Hatanaka and co-ITA Paul Barran for backing us up on our request for support for this clean-tech/agriculture/health science research and development project. 🌱

We are also eternally grateful for our patent agent, Sonia M. Ziesche and her team at Gowling WLG. They rescued the patent application and got it back on the rails after some major hiccups.

We are incredibly proud to have developed this technology in Canada with the support of programs like NRC-IRAP and SR&ED. As an aside, citrus doesn’t grow in Canada because it’s too cold – we consider it a feat that we were able to convince our supporters that a non-Canadian ag-product like citrus peel waste has untapped potential that urgently needs to be unlocked for the health of all of the planet and its inhabitants. 🌎🍁

Our Minimum-Processing-Maximum-Benefits (MPMB™) processing technology cleanly upcycles citrus peel waste to a healthy polyphenol-rich soluble fiber in a whopping 50% yield, and ready to be added to any food, beverage or dietary supplement. You can find our flagship ingredient Mandrimax® in capsule from as MS+ Mandarin Skin Plus® “Ultimate Digestive Relief” available online and in store.

  • Tait Labs Secures New US Patent to Transform Food Waste into Medicine

VANCOUVER, BC, Oct. 19, 2021 /CNW/ – Tait Laboratories Inc. (“Tait Labs” or “the Company”) is pleased to announce its issue of a key patent from the United States Patent and Trademark Office for the Company’s ground-breaking clean extraction technology. The technology upcycles citrus waste into a variety of healthy plant-based ingredients used in food and beverage, animal nutrition, dietary supplements, natural health products and pharmaceutical industries.

“As climate change and food insecurity cause concerns to mount, there has never been a better time to convert waste streams into revenue streams,” says Dr. Andrew Tait, CEO of Tait Labs. “Advancements in crop science and artificial intelligence technology allow us to create more nutritious plant-based products. At Tait Labs, we discover new ways to unlock the therapeutic properties trapped within food waste and capture the valuable compounds that are typically discarded as waste.”

The patented processing technology, entitled MPMB™ Citrus, is a pillar within Tait Labs’ larger Minimum-Processing-Maximum-Benefits technology platform (MPMB™). With this technology platform, Tait Labs seeks to cleanly upcycle a variety of other botanical feedstocks made abundant in the agri-food processing sector.

MPMB™ Citrus has already been commercialized to make Mandrimax® 2:1 Citrus reticulata (mandarin orange) peel extract ingredient, a prebiotic with a twist. The soluble dietary fiber nourishes gut microbes and delivers compounds that work independently of the microbiome to directly repair leaky gut lining and reduce inflammation. Mandrimax® has been demonstrated in MS+ Mandarin Skin Plus®, Tait Labs’ dietary supplement for digestive health. The supplement is sold online, internationally and at retail across Canada, including many Rexall Pharmacies.

US Patent #11,141,449 covers Tait Labs’ proprietary clean water extraction process for citrus peels to simultaneously isolate and enrich compounds of interest in much higher yields than previously possible. With hundreds of varieties of citrus, such as lemons, limes, grapefruit, oranges and tangerines, the Company is exploring dozens of useful applications in partnership with other organizations.

Tait says, “Our technology delivers a cost-effective solution by utilizing food waste to supply healthy high-value ingredients. Food waste is medicine.”
